The British singer Mark Shaw celebrates 63 today

Best known as the lead singer of the British rock band Then Jerico, Mark Shaw was born on June 10, 1961, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Shaw grew up in Chesterfield, Derbyshire and from a young age, he showed a keen interest in music, drawing inspiration from the rock and punk scenes of the 1970s. His passion for singing and performing led him to pursue a career in music.
In 1983, Shaw formed Then Jerico, a band that would go on to achieve significant success in the 1980s. The band’s early lineup included guitarist Scott Taylor, bassist Jasper Stainthorpe, drummer Steve Wren, and keyboardist Alex Mungo. They quickly gained a following with their energetic live performances and distinctive sound, blending rock with elements of new wave and pop.
Then Jerico released their debut album, “First (The Sound of Music),” in 1987. The album was well-received, featuring hit singles such as “The Motive” and “Muscle Deep,” which showcased Shaw’s powerful vocals and the band’s tight musicianship. The success of the debut album established Then Jerico as a prominent band in the British rock scene.
The band’s second album, “The Big Area” (1989), was even more successful, reaching No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. The title track, “The Big Area,” became a major hit, solidifying the band’s reputation and earning them a devoted fan base. This period marked the peak of Then Jerico’s commercial success.
Despite their success, Then Jerico disbanded in 1990 due to internal tensions and changes in the music industry. Shaw embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut solo album, “Almost” in 1991. The album received mixed reviews, but Shaw continued to maintain a presence in the music industry through live performances and collaborations.
In the late 1990s, Shaw reunited with Then Jerico for a series of live shows and new recordings. The reunion was well-received by fans, and the band released the album “Orgasmaphobia” in 1998. Shaw’s powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence continued to captivate audiences.
