The Art of  José de Almada Negreiros

José de Almada Negreiros was a Portuguese artist born on April 7, 1893. Almada was born in the colony of Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe, the son of a Portuguese father, António Lobo de Almada Negreiros, and a Santomean mother, Elvira Freire Sobral. Besides literature and painting, Almada developed ballet choreographies and worked on tapestry, engraving, murals, caricature, mosaic, azulejo tiles, and stained glass. José de Almada Negreiros died in Lisbon, Portugal on July 15, 1970. A large portion of the José de Almada Negreiros art collection can be found at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
