Lionel Richie turns 75
Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born on June 20, 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama, U.S. Richie’s successful career started back in 1968 as the singer and saxophonist for the popular R&B band Commodores. During the 1970’s he became one of the most popular voices in music, scoring hits for the Commodores such as “Easy” and “Three Times a Lady” which he also wrote. It was his songwriting ability that begun his solo career path. He composed hit song “Lady” for Kenny Rogers, which hit No. 1 in 1980, and by 1982 Lionel Richie was launching a successful career as a solo artist. He scored several worldwide hit songs during the 1980’s including “Stuck on You”, “Say You, Say Me”, “Dancing on the Ceiling”, “Ballerina Girl” and “Hello”, all Top 10 songs. He also co-wrote with Michael Jackson the charity single “We Are the World” by USA for Africa, another number-one hit in which he sings too. Despite his record sales since the 1990’s, not matching his 1970’s and 1980’s ones, Richie continues to be one of the most popular singers and artists in the world, and his popularity remains untouchable, in a career that has been awarded several times.
