John Goodman was born John Stephen Goodman was born on June 20, 1952, in Affton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, USA. Raised in a working-class family, Goodman faced tragedy early in life when his father died of a heart attack when he was just two years old. His mother, Virginia, worked multiple jobs to support the family. Goodman developed an interest in acting and sports during his high school years, eventually pursuing a degree in Fine Arts at Missouri State University.
After graduating from college in 1975, Goodman moved to New York City to pursue acting. He started with small roles in commercials, theater, and voice work, gradually building his reputation. His early stage work included performances in off-Broadway productions and regional theater.
Goodman’s breakthrough came in 1988 when he was cast as Dan Conner on the ABC television series “Roseanne.” The show was a massive hit, and Goodman’s portrayal of the lovable, blue-collar family man earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 1993. John Goodman has been married to Anna Beth Hartzog since 1989, and they have one daughter, Molly Evangeline Goodman. Goodman has been open about his struggles with alcoholism and his journey to sobriety. He has credited his wife and daughter for their support during his recovery.
