The provocative British comedian, actor, writer and director Rick Gervais celebrates 63 today

The celebrated British comedian, actor, writer, and director Ricky Gervais, was born on June 25, 1961, in Reading, Berkshire, England. He was the youngest of four children in a working-class family. Gervais attended University College London (UCL), where he studied philosophy and met his long-term partner, Jane Fallon.
Before his rise to fame in comedy, Ricky Gervais dabbled in music. In the early 1980s, he was the lead singer of the new wave band Seona Dancing, which achieved modest success but ultimately did not break into the mainstream. Gervais then transitioned to various office jobs, which later inspired his most famous work.
Ricky Gervais’s breakthrough came with the creation of “The Office,” a mockumentary-style sitcom that premiered on the BBC in 2001. Gervais starred as David Brent, the bumbling and egotistical office manager. The show was a critical and commercial success, earning numerous awards, including Golden Globes and BAFTAs. “The Office” was later adapted into a highly successful American version, further cementing Gervais’s influence in comedy.
Following “The Office,” Gervais created and starred in “Extras” (2005-2007), another critically acclaimed series. He played Andy Millman, a struggling actor surrounded by celebrity cameos, showcasing Gervais’s knack for blending humor with poignant social commentary.
Gervais continued to expand his repertoire with notable works such as “Derek” (2012-2014), where he played a kind-hearted, socially awkward care home worker, and “After Life” (2019-2022), a dark comedy-drama exploring grief and recovery.
In addition to his television success, Gervais has had a substantial impact on the film industry. He co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in films like “The Invention of Lying” (2009) and “Cemetery Junction” (2010). He also lent his voice to animated features, including “Valiant” (2005) and the “Night at the Museum” series.
Ricky Gervais is also renowned for his stand-up comedy. His tours, including “Animals” (2003), “Politics” (2004), and “Humanity” (2018), have been critically acclaimed for their sharp wit and unflinching humor. His ability to tackle controversial topics with a fearless approach has garnered both praise and criticism, reflecting his distinctive style.
Gervais hosted the Golden Globe Awards five times, from 2010 to 2020, becoming famous for his biting and often controversial monologues that skewered Hollywood’s elite. Gervais’s recent projects include the third season of “After Life” and continued stand-up performances, where his humor remains as provocative and insightful as ever.
Rick Gervais has been in a long-term relationship with author and producer Jane Fallon since 1982. The couple resides in Hampstead, London, and they are known for their decision not to marry or have children, a choice Gervais often discusses candidly in his work.
An outspoken advocate for animal rights, Gervais frequently uses his platform to raise awareness about animal welfare issues. His passion for animals and his charitable efforts have earned him respect beyond the entertainment industry.
