Kathy Bates was born Kathleen Doyle Bates on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up in the South, she developed a passion for acting early in life. Bates pursued her interest in drama at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she graduated with a degree in Theatre in 1969. Shortly after, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting.
Bates’ early career was marked by perseverance in the competitive world of theater and film. She began with stage work, performing in various off-Broadway productions. Her breakthrough in theater came with her performance in the 1983 play “Night, Mother,” for which she received critical acclaim and a Tony Award nomination. Bates’ work on stage showcased her ability to bring depth and intensity to her roles, paving the way for her transition to film and television.
Kathy Bates’ film career took off with her iconic role as Annie Wilkes in the 1990 film “Misery,” based on Stephen King’s novel. Her portrayal of the obsessed fan earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, making her a household name. This role demonstrated her remarkable range and ability to portray complex characters with authenticity and power.

“American Horror Story” (2013–2018) where she is a series regular and which earned her an Emmy Award for her role in the third season, “Coven.”
She also has starred in notable films such as “The Blind Side” (2009) and “Tammy” (2014), and took on significant TV roles in series like “Harry’s Law” (2011–2012), which earned her two Emmy nominations.
She recently appeared in the acclaimed Netflix series “The Kominsky Method” (2019–2021) and the movie “Richard Jewell” (2019), for which she received another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Bates also stars in the recent film “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” (2023), based on the beloved novel by Judy Blume.
Kathy Bates has been open about her personal struggles, including her battle with lymphedema and breast cancer, both of which she has overcome with resilience. She uses her platform to advocate for cancer awareness and lymphedema research. Bates was married to Tony Campisi from 1991 to 1997.
