“Starman” was the first single to be released from David Bowie’s upcoming album “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars” in 1972. At the time, Bowie, had quickly fallen back into obscurity after his 1969 hit “Space Oddity”. Despite the mild success of the 1971 “Hunky Dory” album, he was still regarded as one hit wonder by the majority of people. All that changed in 1972. With the creation of Ziggy Stardust, Bowie took Pop music to a whole new level. And one of the earliest “official” appearances of Ziggy, happened on the British TV show Top Of The Pops on July 6, 1972, just a few weeks after the release of the album. With his crimson mane of hair, his two different colored eyes, Wearing his platform boots and his rainbow-colored jumpsuit and playing a blue guitar, Bowie embodied Ziggy Stardust on a performance that influenced just about every future major British music star that was watching the TV at that minute, from Bono and Morrissey to others. “Starman”, a song about an Alien, was very different from the Top of the Pops norm. Somehow, that moment, the stars were aligned, and after that, Rock and Pop music would never be the same again. A legend was born.
