The Beatles debut movie “A Hard Day’s Night” premiered on this day in 1964
Made during the height of Beatlemania to profit from The Beatles huge worldwide popularity, “A Hard Day’s Night”, directed by Richard Lester first premiered at the Pavilion Theatre in London on 6 July 1964—the eve of Ringo Starr’s 24th birthday. This was the first of a series of semi-fiction Beatles movies during the 1960’s that included “Help!” in 1965 and “Magical Mystery Tour” in 1967. Shot for United Artists (UA) using a cinéma vérité style in black-and-white and produced over a period of sixteen weeks, the movie had a low budget for its time of £200,000 and end up being a financial and critical success, becoming that way one of UA’s jewels. With a simple plot that talked about what a “normal” day was in the life of The Beatles, as they travel from their home town of Liverpool to London to perform in a television broadcast. Along the way they must rescue Paul’s unconventional grandfather from various misadventures and drummer Ringo who goes missing just before the crucial concert. Along with comedy and action, The Beatles perform several songs throughout the movie, which later would be featured on their album “A Hard Day’s Night”, the official soundtrack. Ever since it’s original release the movie has developed a cult status, and remains hugely influential on Pop culture. Praised by critics over the years, Time magazine rated it as one of the all-time great 100 films.
