In 1984 Prince gets his first U.S No.1 with “When Doves Cry”

Released on May 16, 1984 as the lead single from Prince’s 1984 album “Purple Rain”, “When Doves Cry” was his first American number one single and remains one of the most popular songs he ever made. As most of Prince’s songs from that period, “When Doves Cry” topped the charts worldwide. In the U.s, it peaked to No.1 on July 7, 1984 where it stayed for five weeks. Written by Prince, after all the other tracks were complete on the “Purple Rain” album, Prince played all instruments on the track, in addition to the vocals of course. One of the unusual aspects on “When Doves Cry” is the fact that there is no bass line, which was not common for a 1980’s dance song. However, during live performances of the song on the Purple Rain Tour, Prince’s bass player Brown Mark added bass lines to it. The music video, directed by Prince himself, was released on MTV in June 1984. It opens with white doves emerging from double doors to reveal Prince in a bathtub and it was nominated for Best Choreography at 1985’s MTV Video Music Awards.
