Ringo Starr is 84 today and we look back at the 11 Beatles songs where he sung lead

Ringo Starr or Sir Richard Starkey, born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940, in Liverpool, England, grew up in a working-class family. His early life was marked by illness; he spent a significant amount of time in hospitals due to appendicitis and tuberculosis. These health challenges affected his education, but during his hospital stays, he developed a love for drumming, using biscuit tins and wooden spoons to practice.
Starr’s early career in music began in the late 1950s when he joined the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. He soon became part of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, a popular band in Liverpool. His distinctive drumming style and engaging stage presence made him a local star. In 1962, he was invited to join The Beatles, replacing their original drummer, Pete Best.
As the drummer for The Beatles, Ringo Starr became an integral part of the band’s success. His steady, reliable drumming provided the backbone for many of the group’s most famous songs. He also sang lead on several tracks, including “Yellow Submarine,” “With a Little Help from My Friends,” and “Octopus’s Garden.”
After The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Starr embarked on a solo career. His early solo albums, “Sentimental Journey” (1970) and “Beaucoups of Blues” (1970), showcased his versatility, with the former focusing on standards and the latter on country music. He achieved commercial success with hits like “It Don’t Come Easy,” “Photograph,” and “You’re Sixteen.” Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Starr continued to release albums and tour.
Starr married Maureen Cox in 1965, and they had three children: Zak, Jason, and Lee. The couple divorced in 1975. In 1981, Starr married actress Barbara Bach, whom he met on the set of the film “Caveman” (1981). They have remained together since and are known for their close relationship and philanthropic efforts.
Starr also has faced challenges with alcohol and substance abuse but has been sober since the late 1980s. He is an advocate for peace and love, often promoting these messages through his music and public appearances.
Today, Ringo Starr remains active in the music industry. Since 1989, he has toured with his All-Starr Band, a rotating lineup of famous musicians who perform both his solo hits and Beatles classics. Starr continues to release new music; his recent albums include “What’s My Name” (2019) and “Zoom In” (2021).
In addition to music, Starr has embraced social media, connecting with fans worldwide and promoting his peace and love message. He was knighted in 2018 for his contributions to music, officially becoming Sir Richard Starkey.
