The actress Shelley Duvall celebrates 75 today
Shelley Alexis Duvall was born on July 7, 1949, in Houston, Texas. Raised in a creative environment by her lawyer father and real estate broker mother, Duvall developed an early interest in the arts. Her unique looks and personality set her apart, foreshadowing her future as a distinctive presence in the film industry.
Duvall’s career began serendipitously in the early 1970s when she was discovered by director Robert Altman at a party. Altman cast her in “Brewster McCloud” (1970), marking the start of a fruitful collaboration. She appeared in several of Altman’s films, including “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” (1971), “Thieves Like Us” (1974), “Nashville” (1975), and “3 Women” (1977), the latter earning her critical acclaim and the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Duvall gained mainstream recognition with her role as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic “The Shining” (1980). Despite the film’s troubled production and her challenging experience on set, her performance became iconic. She continued to work in both film and television throughout the 1980s, starring in movies like “Popeye” (1980), where she played Olive Oyl opposite Robin Williams, and “Time Bandits” (1981).
In the late 1980s and 1990s, Duvall shifted her focus to producing. She created and hosted the children’s television series “Faerie Tale Theatre” (1982-1987), which featured well-known actors in adaptations of classic fairy tales. She also produced “Shelley Duvall’s Tall Tales & Legends” (1985-1987) and “Nightmare Classics” (1989), showcasing her versatility and passion for storytelling.
Duvall has largely kept her personal life private. She was married to artist Bernard Sampson from 1970 until their divorce in 1974. She later dated singer Paul Simon. Duvall is known for her eccentric and unique personality, which has endeared her to fans and colleagues alike.
In the late 1990s, Duvall stepped away from the public eye and acting. She moved back to Texas and led a relatively private life. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in her work and legacy. She would return to acting in the 2023 horror film “The Forest Hills,” marking her first film role in over two decades.
