Beck celebrates 54 today
Beck Hansen, professionally known as Beck, was born Bek David Campbell on July 8, 1970, in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of visual artist Bibbe Hansen and musician David Campbell. Growing up in a culturally rich and artistic environment, Beck was exposed to a variety of musical genres and artistic influences from a young age, fostering his eclectic taste and experimental approach to music.
Beck’s early career began in the underground music scene of Los Angeles in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He gained attention for his innovative and lo-fi recordings, which combined elements of folk, rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. His breakout moment came with the release of the single “Loser” in 1993. The song, with its catchy refrain and genre-blending style, became an unexpected hit and quickly propelled Beck into the spotlight.
Following the success of “Loser,” Beck released his major-label debut album, “Mellow Gold,” in 1994. The album’s eclectic mix of genres and offbeat lyrics earned critical acclaim and established Beck as a unique voice in the alternative music scene.
Beck’s career has been marked by constant evolution and experimentation. He followed up “Mellow Gold” with “Odelay” in 1996, an album that solidified his reputation as a musical innovator. “Odelay” featured hits like “Where It’s At” and “Devils Haircut” and received widespread critical acclaim, earning multiple Grammy nominations.
Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Beck continued to release a series of influential and diverse albums. “Mutations” (1998) showcased a more introspective and acoustic side, while “Midnite Vultures” (1999) embraced a funky, dance-oriented sound. In 2002, Beck released “Sea Change,” a melancholic and emotionally raw album that marked a significant departure from his earlier work and was widely praised for its depth and vulnerability. In 2014 he released “Morning Phase,” often seen as a companion piece to “Sea Change,” which won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
Beck was married to actress Marissa Ribisi from 2004 to 2019, and the couple has two children. Beck is known for his adherence to Scientology, a religion his father also practices. Despite his fame, Beck has managed to maintain a relatively private personal life, focusing on his music and family.
In recent years, he has released albums such as “Colors” (2017) and “Hyperspace” (2019), both of which received critical acclaim and showcased his ability to adapt to contemporary musical trends while maintaining his unique artistic identity, and remains a prolific collaborator, working with a variety of artists across different genres. Beck’s live performances are renowned for their energy and creativity, often featuring elaborate stage setups and a mix of his extensive catalog of hits and deep cuts. Today he turns 54.
