Originally written by Paul Anka in 1960 for Annette Funicello, “Puppy Love” was revived by Donny Osmond twelve years later in 1972. The young teenager Osmond became a teen idol in the early 1970’s as a solo singer, while continuing to sing with his older brothers The Osmonds. His version of “Puppy Love”, released on February 19, 1972, earned him a No.1 at the Canadian charts in April that year, also a No.1 at the UK singles charts on July 8, 1972 and a No.3 at the US Hot 100, it was also a best seller worldwide. His version was so popular that on March 15, 1972, DJ Robert W. Morgan played it for 90 minutes straight on KHJ in Los Angeles. After receiving numerous calls from listeners, LAPD raided the station studios. Confused, the officers left without making any arrests.
