As a co-founder and member of one of the world’s most popular and influential bands, Depeche Mode, Andy Fletcher’s career was filled with countless hit songs including “Just Can’t Enough”, “Strangelove”, “Enjoy The Silence”, “Personal Jesus”, “Dream On”, “Master and Servant” and “Everything Counts”. Fletcher was born on this day 63 years ago.
Born on 8 July 1961 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, Andy Fletcher co-founded Depeche Mode in 1980, alongside Vince Clarke, Martin Gore and later Dave Gahan, influenced by acts such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Kraftwerk, early Human League, and early OMD. The band released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981 that featured the mega-hit “Just Can’t Get Enough”, which became their signature song. Depeche Mode became one of the most influential and popular bands of all time ever since they released their debut in 1981, and they produced countless hit singles and albums, including “Strangelove”, “Enjoy The Silence”, “Personal Jesus”, “Dream On”, “Master and Servant”, “Everything Counts” and several others, riding a wave of popularity that lasts to this day. Despite it, Fletcher was the only member of the band who did not receive a songwriting credit, however, he also split his role as keyboardist and bassist with the role of managing the band, handling many of the band’s business, legal, and other non-musical interests over the years. Depeche Mode released their latest album Spirit in 2017. Andy Fletcher was inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Depeche Mode in 2020. Fletcher died from natural causes at his home on 26 May 2022, aged 60.
