Remembering the singer Mel Appleby from the 1980’s British duo Mel and Kim

Melanie Susan Appleby, known as Mel Appleby, was born on July 11, 1966, in Hackney, London, England. Raised in a working-class family, Mel grew up with a passion for music and performance, which she shared with her sister Kim. The sisters’ close bond would later become the foundation of their successful musical career.
Mel and her sister Kim began their music career in the mid-1980s. Before their musical breakthrough, Mel worked as a model. The sisters were discovered by the production team Stock Aitken Waterman, who saw potential in their dynamic presence and vocal abilities. In 1986, they were signed to a record deal, and Mel and Kim were born.
Their debut single, “Showing Out (Get Fresh at the Weekend),” released in 1986, quickly climbed the charts, reaching the top 10 in the UK and several other countries. The duo’s second single, “Respectable,” released in 1987, became a massive hit, reaching number one in the UK and several other countries. The song’s catchy melody and the sisters’ energetic performance style made them instant pop stars.
Mel and Kim’s debut album, “F.L.M.” (1987), was a commercial success, featuring hits like “F.L.M.” and “I’m the One Who Really Loves You.” The album showcased their unique blend of dance-pop and their charismatic stage presence. The sisters’ fashion-forward image, characterized by their distinctive style and vibrant personality, further cemented their popularity.
However, their rising career faced a major setback when Mel was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, paraganglioma, in 1987. Despite her illness, Mel remained determined to continue performing and recording. The duo’s career was put on hold as Mel underwent treatment, but her health continued to decline.
Mel Appleby was known for her vivacious personality and her close relationship with her sister Kim. The duo’s chemistry and mutual support were evident both on and off stage.
Mel Appleby passed away on January 18, 1990, at the age of 23, in Westminster, London. She died of pneumonia, a complication related to her cancer. Her death was a significant loss to the music industry and her fans, who admired her talent and resilience.
Mel and Kim’s impact on the pop and dance music scene of the 1980s remains significant, with their songs continuing to be celebrated for their infectious energy and catchy hooks. Mel’s courage in the face of illness and her contribution to the music world are remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
