The Bauhaus voice and Godfather of Goth Rock Peter Murphy celebrates 67 today

Peter John Murphy was born on July 11, 1957, in Northampton, England. Growing up in a working-class family, Murphy developed an early interest in the arts and literature, which would later influence his musical and lyrical style.
Peter Murphy’s career began in the late 1970s when he co-founded the gothic rock band Bauhaus in 1978 alongside Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins. Bauhaus quickly gained a following for their dark, atmospheric sound and Murphy’s distinctive baritone voice and theatrical stage presence. The band’s debut single, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” released in 1979, became a landmark in the goth rock genre and is often cited as the first gothic rock record.
Bauhaus released several influential albums, including “In the Flat Field” (1980), “Mask” (1981), and “The Sky’s Gone Out” (1982). Their music combined elements of punk, glam rock, and avant-garde influences, establishing a unique sound that resonated with fans of the emerging goth subculture. However, internal tensions led to the band’s breakup in 1983.
After Bauhaus disbanded, Murphy embarked on a solo career that showcased his versatility as an artist. His debut solo album, “Should the World Fail to Fall Apart” (1986), featured a more diverse range of musical styles and demonstrated Murphy’s ability to reinvent himself. He followed this with “Love Hysteria” (1988), which received critical acclaim and included the hit single “All Night Long.”
Murphy’s third album, “Deep” (1989), was a commercial success, driven by the popular single “Cuts You Up,” which topped the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Murphy continued to release solo albums, including “Holy Smoke” (1992), “Cascade” (1995), and “Dust” (2002). His music during this period explored various genres, from rock to electronic and Middle Eastern influences.
In the mid-2000s, Murphy reunited with Bauhaus for a series of tours and a new album, “Go Away White” (2008). Although the reunion was short-lived, it reignited interest in both Bauhaus and Murphy’s solo work. He continued to tour extensively, performing both Bauhaus classics and his solo material.
Murphy’s recent solo albums, “Ninth” (2011) and “Lion” (2014), have been well-received, showcasing his enduring talent and ability to adapt to contemporary music trends while maintaining his distinctive style. He also performed a series of live shows celebrating 40 years of Bauhaus.
Often referred to as the “Godfather of Goth” for his pioneering work in the genre, Peter Murphy’s live performances are celebrated for their intensity and theatricality, drawing devoted fans from around the world.
Peter Murphy has been married to Beyhan Murphy, a choreographer, since 1982, and they have two children. The family has lived in various countries, including Turkey, where Murphy drew inspiration for his album “Dust.”
In recent years, Murphy has faced health challenges, including a heart attack in 2019. However, he has returned to stage after it. Today he celebrates 67.
