In 1964 the Rolling Stones gets their first UK No.1 hit with “It’s All Over Now”

Written by Bobby Womack and Shirley Womack, “It’s All Over Now” was was first released by The Valentinos featuring Bobby Womack in 1964. During their North American Tour the same year, the Rolling Stones heard the song and decided to record their version nine days later at Chess Studios in Chicago, despite initial criticism from Bobby Womack. The song was first released as a single in the UK, where it peaked at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart on July 14, 1964, giving the Rolling Stones their first number one hit. In the U.S, it was the band’s third single and stayed in the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks, peaking at number 26. It was later included on their second American album “12 X 5”. In Europe, the song became one of the Stones first big hits and remained a concert staple for the band during that period. In his 2010 autobiography, “Life”, Keith Richards remembers that John Lennon criticized his guitar solo on “It’s All Over Now” and Richards agreed that it was not one of his best, but despite that, several other musicians have stated the influence the playing of Richards had for them in the song, such as Bruce Springsteen. This was only the beginning of a string of hit singles for the Stones during the rest of the 1960’s, that included “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” released in 1965, “Time Is On My Side”, “The Last Time” and “19th Nervous Breakdown” among many others.
