Donald Sutherland was born Donald McNichol Sutherland on July 17, 1935, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Raised in a small town in the Maritime province, he developed an early interest in acting. Sutherland studied at Victoria University, an affiliate of the University of Toronto, where he graduated with a double major in engineering and drama. He further honed his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Sutherland’s acting career began on the stage and with minor roles in British films and television during the early 1960s. His breakout role came in 1967 when he was cast as Vernon Pinkley in the war film “The Dirty Dozen.” This performance brought him international recognition and set the stage for a prolific film career.
In the 1970s, Sutherland’s career skyrocketed with roles in iconic films such as “MASH” (1970), where he played the witty and irreverent Hawkeye Pierce, and “Klute” (1971), a gripping thriller in which he starred alongside Jane Fonda. He continued to make a mark in Hollywood with critically acclaimed performances in “Don’t Look Now” (1973), “The Eagle Has Landed” (1976), and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978).
The 1980s and 1990s saw Sutherland in a variety of roles, notable films from this period include “Ordinary People” (1980), “A Dry White Season” (1989), and “JFK” (1991). His portrayal of complex characters in both mainstream and independent films earned him widespread respect in the industry.
In his later years, Sutherland continued to work steadily, taking on a range of roles that underscored his enduring talent. He reached a new generation of audiences with his role as President Snow in “The Hunger Games” series (2012-2015), a performance that added a contemporary blockbuster to his extensive resume. Additionally, his work in television, such as his role in the miniseries “Path to War” (2002) and “Dirty Sexy Money” (2007-2009), demonstrated his adaptability and sustained appeal.
Sutherland was married three times, his first marriage was to Lois Hardwick, a Canadian actress, in 1959. However, the marriage ended in divorce in 1966. He then married Shirley Douglas, a fellow Canadian actress and the daughter of Canadian political leader Tommy Douglas, in 1966. Together, they had two children: Kiefer Sutherland, who followed in his father’s footsteps to become a renowned actor, and Rachel Sutherland, a successful post-production supervisor. Unfortunately, Sutherland and Douglas divorced in 1970.
In 1972, Sutherland married Francine Racette, a French-Canadian actress. The couple had three sons: Rossif, Angus, and Roeg Sutherland, all of whom have pursued careers in the entertainment industry.
In 1979, Sutherland faced a serious health scare when he was diagnosed with spinal meningitis while filming “Ordinary People.” His condition was critical, and he was hospitalized for an extended period. Fortunately, he made a full recovery and continued his prolific career in acting.
Sutherland was also been involved in numerous charitable activities. He supported various causes, including health care, education, and the arts. His philanthropic efforts were often carried out quietly, reflecting his preference for maintaining a low profile in his personal endeavors.

Donald Sutherland passed on June 20, 2024 at age 88 following a long illness.
