“That’s All Right” was written and originally performed by blues singer Arthur Crudup in 1946 and rereleased under the title “That’s All Right, Mama” in 1949. On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley recorded his version of the song at Sun Studios, changing parts of the original Crudup’s lyrics. It was released as the first Elvis Presley single by Sun Records on July 19, 1954, with “Blue Moon of Kentucky” as the B-side.
Although Arthur Crudup was credited as the composer on the label of Presley’s single, even after legal battles into the 1970’s, was reportedly never paid any royalties. Upon the release of Presley’s single in 1954, Sam Phillips gave copies of the acetate to local Memphis disc jockeys. Interest in the song was so intense that D.J Dewey Phillips reportedly played the acetate 14 times and received over 40 telephone calls on his popular radio show “Red, Hot & Blue”. The single went on to sold around 20.000 copies, which was not enough to peak to the top of the charts, however, it is historically one of the most influential songs on Rock music as it presented Elvis Presley to the world for the first time as a singer. Less than two years later, Elvis Presley was a worldwide recognized name that became known to this day as The King of Rock N’ Roll.
