The Beatles achieve another milestone in 1967 with the love anthem “All You Need Is Love” becoming their 12th UK No.1 single
“All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles was first released as a single on July 7, 1967, with “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” on the B-side in the U.K. The song, written by Lennon-McCartney, was performed by the band live on the first ever satellite TV production “Our World” representing the U.K. The Beatles were then asked to provide a song to “Our World” with a message that could be easily understood by everyone. It was a win for the band, as the catchy chorus helped the song developing a symbolic status as an international anthem for love to this day, in particular, it’s considered by many to be the No.1 song of the 1967 Summer of Love. The popular song starts with the intro to the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise” and also contains elements from Glenn Miller’s 1939 hit “In the Mood”, and from Wayne Shanklin’s 1958 hit “Chanson D’Amour”. “All You Need Is Love” debut on the UK singles charts at No.2 and on July 19, peaked to No. 1, making it the group’s 12th UK No.1 single. It was similarly successful worldwide, and in the United States after its release on 17 July, reached number one for a week. Though intended to be released as a single only, the song end up being featured as an album track of the American version of “Magical Mystery Tour”, that unlike the U.K EP release, was made into a full LP consisting in a B-Side of several 1967 Beatles singles including “All You Need Is Love”. It was also later released on the 1969 LP “Yellow Submarine”, the soundtrack to The Beatles animated movie.
