Actor Frank Whaley turns 61 today

Frank Whaley’s character Brett on the 1994 Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” remains one of the most memorable in the movie, especially his unavoidable death at the hands of Samuel L. Jackson’s and John Travolta’s characters.

Frank Joseph Whaley was born on July 20, 1963, in Syracuse, New York. Growing up in a working-class family, Whaley developed an early interest in the arts, particularly in acting and writing. His passion for performance led him to pursue drama studies at the University at Albany, SUNY, where he honed his craft and prepared for a career in the entertainment industry.
Whaley’s film career began in the late 1980s with notable roles in movies such as “Ironweed” (1987) and “Field of Dreams” (1989). His breakout role came in 1989 when he starred as the young, ambitious writer in Oliver Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July,” opposite Tom Cruise. This role showcased his talent and helped establish him as a promising actor in Hollywood.
In the early 1990s, Whaley continued to build his filmography with significant roles in “The Doors” (1991), where he played Robby Krieger, the guitarist for The Doors, and “Hoffa” (1992), alongside Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito. His performance as Brett in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” (1994) became one of his most memorable roles, particularly for the iconic scene involving Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Jules Winnfield.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Whaley maintained a steady presence in both film and television. He starred in various genres, demonstrating his versatility as an actor. Some of his notable films during this period include “Swimming with Sharks” (1994), where he played a young Hollywood assistant tormented by his boss (Kevin Spacey), and “The Doors” (1991).
Whaley also made several television appearances, guest-starring in popular series like “The X-Files,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” and “Boston Legal.” His ability to adapt to different roles and genres made him a sought-after character actor.
In addition to acting, Whaley explored his talents behind the camera. He wrote and directed several films, including “Joe the King” (1999), a semi-autobiographical drama that won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and “The Jimmy Show” (2001), which he also starred in.
Frank Whaley married Heather Bucha in 2001, and the couple has two children. Known for his private nature, Whaley has largely kept his personal life out of the public eye, focusing instead on his work in the entertainment industry.
Aside from his career in film and television, Whaley is passionate about theater and has continued to perform on stage throughout his career. Today he turns 61.
