Paul Cook is perhaps most famous as being the co-founder of the Sex Pistols, one of Rock’s most outrageous acts of all time, but the former Sex Pistol has also moved into different directions far from Punk throughout his career. He was born in London, England on July 20, 1956. Cook met future Sex Pistols guitarist and co-founder Steve Jones at school. The pair formed a band, The Strand, which evolved into the Sex Pistols when Johnny Rotten and Glenn Matlock joined in 1976. That same year the band released their controversial debut single “Anarchy In The U.K”, and for the next two years, with the rise of Punk Rock, they became the leaders of the movement, releasing one studio album only, “Nevermind the Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols” in 1977, one of Rock’s most influential and seminal albums. With the sudden breakup of the Pistols in 1978 during their first and only U.S tour, Cook and Jones initially worked on the soundtrack to Julien Temple’s film, “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle” featuring the band, minus Johnny Rotten. The two also recorded a few songs using the Sex Pistols name, Cook singing lead on the album version of the song “Silly Thing”. With the death of Sid Vicious in 1979 and with Rotten forming PIL, Cook and Jones formed the new wave band The Professionals, who made some initial success with their debut album. During that period, a little-known fact about Cook and Steve Jones is that they discovered the English new wave girl-group Bananarama. Cook helped the trio record their debut single, “Aie a Mwana”, and acted as a producer on their 1982 debut album “Deep Sea Skiving”. Over the years Paul Cook has been returning to the Sex Pistols in reunion tours and also to The Professionals, but he also has joined several other projects and remains an active musician, and even played for a while Football at the Hollywood United a U.S team that was initially made up of several U.S.-based British celebrities from the world of music, film and television, including Cook and Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury of The Cult, and Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard.
