The actor Jon Lovitz is celebrating 67 today
Jon Lovitz was born Jonathan Michael Lovitz on July 21, 1957, in Tarzana, California. Raised in the San Fernando Valley, Lovitz grew up in a middle-class Jewish family. He developed a passion for comedy and performing at an early age, inspired by comedians like Woody Allen and the Marx Brothers. Lovitz pursued his love for acting by attending the University of California, Irvine, where he studied drama and graduated in 1979.
After college, Lovitz honed his comedic skills at the famous improv comedy troupe, The Groundlings, in Los Angeles. It was here that he developed many of the characters and comedic styles that would later become his trademark. Lovitz’s big break came in 1985 when he was hired as a cast member on the iconic sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL).
During his tenure on SNL from 1985 to 1990, Lovitz became known for his memorable characters, including Tommy Flanagan, the Pathological Liar, and the Master Thespian. His unique comedic timing and distinctive voice made him a fan favorite, and he earned an Emmy nomination for his work on the show.
After leaving SNL, Lovitz transitioned to a successful career in film and television. He appeared in numerous movies, including “Big” (1988), “A League of Their Own” (1992), and “The Wedding Singer” (1998). His voice acting talents were showcased in animated films and TV shows, most notably as the voice of Jay Sherman in the cult classic animated series “The Critic” (1994-1995).
Lovitz also made guest appearances on popular TV shows such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” and “The Simpsons,” further establishing his reputation as a versatile comedian. In addition to his acting career, Lovitz pursued stand-up comedy, performing in clubs and theaters across the country.
In the 2000s and 2010s, Lovitz continued to work in both film and television. He appeared in movies like “Rat Race” (2001) and lent his voice to animated series such as “The Simpsons” and “American Dad!” He also made a successful return to the stage with his stand-up comedy routines and opened the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles, which operated from 2009 to 2014.
Lovitz is also an avid golfer and often participates in celebrity golf tournaments.
Throughout his career, Lovitz has been known for his distinctive comedic style, characterized by his exaggerated delivery and memorable catchphrases. His ability to transition between different mediums—sketch comedy, film, television, and voice acting—demonstrates his enduring appeal in the entertainment industry. Today he celebrates 67.
