Robin Williams was born Robin McLaurin Williams on July 21, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. Raised in a wealthy family, his father was a senior executive at Ford Motor Company, and his mother was a former model. Williams grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and later moved to Marin County, California. He attended the prestigious Detroit Country Day School and Redwood High School. Known for his quick wit and humor even as a child, Williams pursued acting studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was classmates with Christopher Reeve.
Williams began his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s, performing in clubs and on television. His big break came in 1978 when he was cast as the alien Mork in the TV show “Mork & Mindy.” The show was a massive hit, making Williams a household name and showcasing his improvisational skills and unique comedic style.
Transitioning to film, Williams’s early roles included “Popeye” (1980) and “The World According to Garp” (1982). He continued to build his reputation with acclaimed performances in “Good Morning, Vietnam” (1987), which earned him his first Academy Award nomination, and “Dead Poets Society” (1989), which solidified his status as a versatile actor capable of dramatic roles.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Williams starred in a series of successful films, displaying his wide range of acting abilities. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dr. Sean Maguire in “Good Will Hunting” (1997). Other notable films include “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), “The Birdcage” (1996), and “Patch Adams” (1998).
Williams also lent his voice to numerous animated characters, most famously as the Genie in Disney’s “Aladdin” (1992). His voice work and comedic talent brought the character to life, earning him widespread acclaim.
In addition to his film career, Williams returned to stand-up comedy, releasing several successful HBO specials and embarking on comedy tours. His later film roles included “One Hour Photo” (2002), “Insomnia” (2002), and the “Night at the Museum” series (2006-2014).
Robin Williams married Valerie Velardi in 1978, and they had one son, Zachary Pym, before divorcing in 1988. He married Marsha Garces, his son’s nanny, in 1989, and they had two children, Zelda Rae and Cody Alan. The couple divorced in 2010. Williams married Susan Schneider in 2011.
Williams struggled with addiction and mental health issues throughout his life. He battled alcoholism and drug addiction, and in his later years, he was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. Despite his personal struggles, Williams was known for his kindness, generosity, and commitment to helping others. He was involved in numerous charitable organizations and humanitarian efforts.
Robin Williams tragically passed away on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63. He was found dead in his home in Paradise Cay, California. The cause of death was ruled a suicide by hanging. Williams had been suffering from Lewy body dementia, a neurodegenerative disease that affects thinking, movement, behavior, and mood, which was not fully diagnosed until after his death.
