Danny Lebern Glover was born on July 22, 1946, in San Francisco, California. His parents, Carrie Hunley and James Glover, were both postal workers and active members of the NAACP, which instilled in him a strong sense of social justice from an early age. Glover attended George Washington High School in San Francisco and later enrolled at San Francisco State University (SFSU), where he studied economics. Though he initially pursued a career in public service, his passion for acting led him to the American Conservatory Theater, where he trained formally in drama.
Glover’s professional acting career began on stage in the late 1970s. His theater work included performances in productions like “Macbeth” and “The Island,” which earned him critical acclaim. His breakthrough in film came with his role in “Escape from Alcatraz” (1979), starring alongside Clint Eastwood. This early role helped pave the way for more significant opportunities in Hollywood.
Glover’s portrayal of Mr. Albert Johnson in “The Color Purple” (1985) directed by Steven Spielberg, was a landmark performance that garnered widespread recognition. His depiction of the complex character highlighted his ability to convey deep emotional range and sensitivity.
The role that solidified Danny Glover’s status as a major Hollywood star was that of Sergeant Roger Murtaugh in the “Lethal Weapon” series (1987-1998). Starring opposite Mel Gibson, Glover’s character became iconic, and his catchphrase, “I’m too old for this,” entered popular culture. The success of the “Lethal Weapon” films showcased his talent for both action and comedy, making him a household name.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Glover appeared in a wide variety of films, including “Predator 2” (1990), “Grand Canyon” (1991), and “Beloved” (1998). He also took on significant roles in films addressing social issues, such as “To Sleep with Anger” (1990), for which he received an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
In addition to his film career, Glover has had a notable presence on television, with roles in series such as “Lonesome Dove” (1989) and guest appearances in shows like “ER” and “Brothers & Sisters.” He also lent his voice to animated projects, including “Antz” (1998) and “The Prince of Egypt” (1998).
Glover’s career has continued to flourish in recent years with roles in films like “Dreamgirls” (2006), “2012” (2009), and “Sorry to Bother You” (2018). His diverse body of work highlights his versatility and enduring appeal as an actor.
Danny Glover married Asake Bomani in 1975, and they have a daughter named Mandisa. Although they later divorced, Glover has remained close to his family. In 2009, he married Eliane Cavalleiro.
Outside of his acting career, Glover is deeply committed to activism and humanitarian work. He has been a vocal advocate for various causes, including civil rights, labor rights, and global humanitarian issues. Glover has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme and has been actively involved in efforts to combat poverty, disease, and injustice around the world.
Glover’s activism is reflected in his involvement with numerous organizations, such as TransAfrica Forum and the Black AIDS Institute. He has also supported movements for worker rights and has been an outspoken critic of social and economic inequalities.
