Rick Davies, the co-founder, vocalist and keyboardist of Supertramp turns 80 today
Rick Davies gave voice (and music) to some of Rock’s most popular songs as the co-founder, vocalist and keyboardist of prog rock band Supertramp. Born on July 22, 1944, in Swindon, Wiltshire, England, Rick Davies wrote and co-wrote the majority of Supertramp’s songs, including those of their 1979 hit album “Breakfast in America”. He shared lead vocals often with Roger Hodgson, co-founder of Supertramp and also his songwriting partner, until Hodgson departure from the band in 1983. Davies and Hodgson formed Supertramp in 1969 and released their debut self-titled album “Supertramp” in 1970. During the mid 1970’s with the increasing popularity of Prog Rock, Supertramp became one of the most popular bands labeled under that emerging style. However, their distinctive sound and melodies, that can be heard on songs such as their 1974 smash hit “Dreamer”, separated them from other bands linked to Prog Rock such as Genesis. In 1979 they released their most successful album, “Breakfast in America” that featured a string of hit songs including “The Logical Song”, “Breakfast in America”, “Goodbye Stranger” and “Take the Long Way Home”. In 1980 the band was at the height of their popularity, but also started to fall apart. They had one last big hit in 1982 with “It’s Raining Again”. After Hodgson’s departure in 1983, Davies kept Supertramp for more 5 years until it was disbanded in 1988. In 1997, during work on what would have been his first solo album, Davies decided to reform Supertramp. The group promptly returned to recording and touring, which yielded another two studio albums before they split again but reunited in 2010 for their 70–10 tour. Supertramp’s songs remain popular worldwide, often air played and with new generations discovering it. Rick Davies turns 80 today.
