The actor and comedian David Spade celebrates 60 today

David Wayne Spade was born on July 22, 1964, in Birmingham, Michigan. He was the youngest of three brothers in a family that eventually settled in Scottsdale, Arizona. His early life was marked by a mix of stability and challenges; his parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised primarily by his mother. Despite the upheavals, Spade developed a sharp sense of humor, which he used as a coping mechanism. He attended Arizona State University, where he earned a degree in business, but his passion for comedy quickly took precedence over his academic pursuits.
David Spade began his career in comedy performing stand-up routines at clubs and colleges. His big break came when he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) in 1990 as a writer and performer. During his time on SNL, Spade became known for his sarcastic wit and memorable characters, such as the snarky “Hollywood Minute” reporter and the “Gap Girl.” His dry humor and distinctive delivery made him a standout on the show, where he remained until 1996.
After leaving SNL, Spade transitioned to film and television with considerable success. He starred alongside fellow SNL alum Chris Farley in the hit comedies “Tommy Boy” (1995) and “Black Sheep” (1996). These films showcased Spade’s talent for playing the sarcastic straight man to Farley’s larger-than-life characters, solidifying his status as a leading comedic actor.
Spade continued his film career with roles in movies such as “Joe Dirt” (2001), “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star” (2003), and “Grown Ups” (2010) alongside Adam Sandler. His television career also flourished; he starred in the sitcom “Just Shoot Me!” (1997-2003), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Spade later appeared in “8 Simple Rules” and had a long-running role in “Rules of Engagement” (2007-2013).
In addition to acting, Spade has made a name for himself as a voice actor, lending his voice to characters in animated films like “The Emperor’s New Groove” (2000) and its sequels. His stand-up comedy career also remained strong, with several specials and tours demonstrating his enduring appeal as a live performer.
David Spade’s personal life has been marked by both highs and lows. He has been linked romantically to several high-profile women, including Heather Locklear, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Jillian Grace, with whom he has a daughter named Harper, born in 2008. Despite his fame, Spade has maintained a relatively low-key personal life and is known for his close friendships with fellow comedians and actors.
Tragedy struck in 1997 when his close friend and frequent collaborator Chris Farley died of a drug overdose. This loss profoundly affected Spade, but he continued to honor Farley’s memory through his work and by speaking openly about their friendship.
Spade has also dealt with personal challenges, including a 2000 incident in which he was attacked by an assistant in his home, leading to heightened security measures and a greater focus on his personal safety.
David Spade’s career has spanned over three decades, characterized by his sharp wit, distinctive voice, and ability to make audiences laugh with his unique brand of sarcasm. From his breakout on SNL to his successful film and television career, Spade has proven himself as a versatile and enduring figure in comedy.
