Slash turns 59: The 10 Best Guns N’ Roses music videos
Slash was born Saul Hudson on July 23, 1965, in Hampstead, London, England. He is the son of Anthony Hudson, a British artist, and Ola J. Hudson, an African American costume designer. His family moved to Los Angeles, California, when he was a young child. Growing up in a creative environment, Slash developed a keen interest in music, particularly rock and roll. He received his first guitar at the age of 15 and quickly became dedicated to mastering the instrument, often practicing for up to 12 hours a day.
Slash’s music career began in the early 1980s when he joined several local bands in Los Angeles. His big break came in 1985 when he joined Guns N’ Roses, a band formed by singer Axl Rose, guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. The band’s lineup, with Slash on lead guitar, became iconic and they quickly rose to fame.
In 1987, Guns N’ Roses released their debut album, “Appetite for Destruction,” which became a massive success. The album included hits like “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” and “Paradise City,” and has since sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Slash’s distinctive guitar playing, characterized by his bluesy, soulful solos and riff-driven style, played a significant role in the band’s sound and success.
Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Guns N’ Roses continued to dominate the rock scene with albums like “G N’ R Lies” (1988), “Use Your Illusion I” (1991), and “Use Your Illusion II” (1991). However, internal tensions and conflicts led to Slash leaving the band in 1996.
Following his departure from Guns N’ Roses, Slash formed the supergroup Slash’s Snakepit, releasing two albums: “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” (1995) and “Ain’t Life Grand” (2000). He later co-founded the supergroup Velvet Revolver in 2002 with former Guns N’ Roses members Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, along with Stone Temple Pilots’ Scott Weiland. Velvet Revolver released two successful albums, “Contraband” (2004) and “Libertad” (2007).
Slash also pursued a solo career, releasing his self-titled debut solo album in 2010, which featured collaborations with various artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, and Chris Cornell. He continued to release solo albums, including “Apocalyptic Love” (2012), “World on Fire” (2014), and “Living the Dream” (2018), often collaborating with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators.
In 2016, Slash reunited with Guns N’ Roses for the “Not in This Lifetime… Tour,” which became one of the highest-grossing tours of all time. The reunion reignited interest in the band and brought Slash’s iconic guitar playing back to millions of fans worldwide.
Slash married model Renee Suran in 1992, but they divorced in 1997. In 2001, he married Perla Ferrar, with whom he has two sons, London Emilio and Cash Anthony. The couple divorced in 2018 after several years of separation.
Slash has been open about his struggles with substance abuse, particularly during his years with Guns N’ Roses. He has faced several health scares, including a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, a form of heart disease, in 2001. Despite these challenges, Slash has maintained a successful career and remains a beloved figure in rock music.
In addition to his music career, Slash is an animal rights activist and a supporter of various charities. He is also a dedicated reptile enthusiast and has a large collection of snakes.
For over three decades now Slash’s signature top hat, curly hair, and Les Paul guitar have made him one of the most recognizable figures in rock history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Guns N’ Roses. Today that he celebrates 59, here’s the Top 10 Guns N’ Roses music videos.
