“Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)”, it’s one of Roy Orbison’s most popular songs, featuring his distinctive odd vocal tone and haunting music.Written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson, “Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)” was presented first to Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers, who turned it down, leaving Orbison to sing and play his own composition. It end up being the right decision as this was the song that first showcased his surprisingly powerful voice, particularly when he hits his distinctive falsetto note. Released on May, 1960, it became Roy Orbison’s first major hit when it hit No.2 at the Hot 100 on July 25, 1960, blocked to peak at No.1 by Brenda Lee’s “I’m Sorry”. However, on October 1960, it peaked to No.1 in England. It was also a huge hit worldwide for the singer. After this release, Orbison had a string of hit singles that are among some of the most memorable Pop and Rock songs ever, including “Crying”, “In Dreams”, “It’s Over” and “Oh, Pretty Woman” among many others.
