In July 1987 Peter Gabriel peaks to No.1 at the US Hot 100 with “Sledgehammer”
Written by Peter Gabriel himself and released as the lead single from his fifth studio album, “So” on April 25, 1986, “Sledgehammer”, backed with “Don’t Break This Rhythm”, “I Have the Touch” (mix) and “Biko” (ext.), became Peter Gabriel’s biggest hit in the U.S, hitting the top spot on July 26, 1986. The former Genesis frontman already had scored a hit with “Games Without Frontiers”, and with “Sledgehammer” solidified his solo career during the 1980’s. The song, a now 80’s classic that already had been a worldwide hit and scored #1 in several countries, also made history at the MTV ceremony it got 9 awards including Best Video, the most awards a single video has won. The famous video features a Stop-Motion animation blend with Plasticine, Gabriel lay under a sheet of glass for 16 hours while filming the video one frame at a time. The video ranked at number four on MTV’s 100 Greatest Music Videos Ever Made and “Sledgehammer” has also been declared MTV’s number one animated video of all time.
