Australian actor, filmmaker and comedian Yahoo Serious of 1980’s movie “Young Einstein” turns 71
Before Yahoo!, the search engine, during the 1980’s, there was Yahoo Serious, the Australian comedian who got famous for the 1988 movie “Young Einstein”.
Yahoo Serious was born Greg Pead on July 27, 1953, in Cardiff, New South Wales, Australia. From an early age, Serious exhibited a creative and unconventional streak that would later define his career in the entertainment industry. He legally changed his name to Yahoo Serious in 1980, a decision that highlighted his distinctive personality and unique approach to life and art.
Serious began his journey in the arts as a self-taught filmmaker. His breakthrough came with his debut feature film, “Young Einstein” (1988). In this film, he not only directed and wrote the script but also starred as the titular character, a fictional version of Albert Einstein who discovers the theory of relativity while living in rural Tasmania. The film’s quirky humor, imaginative storytelling, and distinctive visual style captured the public’s attention, making it a cult classic in Australia and achieving modest international success. “Young Einstein” showcased Serious’s talent for blending slapstick comedy with historical and scientific themes in a highly original way.
Following the success of “Young Einstein,” Serious continued to create films in his distinctive style. His next major project was “Reckless Kelly” (1993), in which he starred as a modern-day version of the legendary Australian outlaw Ned Kelly. The film, like its predecessor, featured a mix of comedy and action, though it did not achieve the same level of acclaim or box office success.
In 2000, Serious released “Mr. Accident,” a comedy about a bumbling young man who works in an egg factory. Despite its creative premise and the director’s trademark humor, the film failed to resonate with audiences and critics, marking a downturn in his filmmaking career.
Yahoo Serious married Lulu Pinkus, an actress and producer who collaborated with him on several projects, including “Young Einstein.” They have kept their relationship and personal details largely out of the public eye, reflecting Serious’s preference for privacy.
While Yahoo Serious’s film career did not sustain the momentum of his early success, his work remains notable for its originality and the distinctive voice he brought to Australian cinema. “Young Einstein” continues to be appreciated for its whimsical take on history and science, and it stands as a testament to Serious’s creative vision and unique approach to filmmaking.
In 2000, he tried to sue the search engine Yahoo! for trademark infringement, but the case was thrown out because Serious could not prove that he sells products or services under the name “Yahoo” and therefore could not prove that he suffered harm or confusion due to the search engine.
Today, though he has not been active in the film industry in recent years, Yahoo Serious remains a significant figure in the annals of Australian cinema, remembered for his bold, offbeat style and his ability to make audiences laugh while encouraging them to see the world through a different lens.
