The controversial and wild Rocker Jerry “The Killer” Lee Lewis was in 1957 considered one of the most outrageous artists due to his music and stage antics. This led to popular TV shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show to reject the now iconic Rocker from performing. But with his popular single “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” out, it was getting harder for the mainstream to ignore The Killer. On September 28, 1957, for the first time he had the opportunity to perform on TV, all thanks to Steve Allen. The popular host of NBC’s The Steve Allen Show, the main rival to CBS The Ed Sullivan Show, was not known to be too fond of Rock N’ Roll, however, during the late 1950’s he turned his variety program into a showcase for several Rockers including Elvis Presley and Fats Domino among others. Despite the infamous popularity of Jerry Lee Lewis, he was invited to perform and gave a killer performance of “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” where for the first time he displayed his trademarks gimmicks to a large audience watching him on TV. A few months after that performance, The Killer released “Great Balls of Fire”, his signature song and an enduring Rock hit which earned him another invitation for The Steve Allen Show. Jerry Lee Lewis scandalous lifestyle almost put an end to his career, but The Killer still went up onstage nearly until the end of his life.
