Paul Anka was born on July 30, 1941, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Growing up in a tight-knit Lebanese Canadian family, Anka developed an early interest in music. By the age of 12, he was already performing locally, demonstrating a natural talent that would soon capture the attention of the music industry.
Anka’s big break came in 1957 with the release of his first major hit, “Diana.” Written when he was just 15 years old, the song quickly climbed the charts, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. “Diana” was an instant sensation, selling millions of copies worldwide and establishing Anka as a teenage heartthrob and a significant force in the pop music scene.
Following “Diana,” Anka continued to produce a string of hits throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, including “Lonely Boy,” “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” and “Puppy Love.” His smooth vocals and knack for catchy, relatable lyrics endeared him to a wide audience, cementing his status as a pop icon.
Beyond his singing career, Anka demonstrated remarkable talent as a songwriter. He penned the theme for “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and wrote the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra’s signature song, “My Way.” His songwriting extended to other artists as well, contributing to the success of musicians like Tom Jones with “She’s a Lady.”
In the 1970s, Anka’s career took a different turn as he began focusing more on adult contemporary music. He enjoyed continued success with hits like “(You’re) Having My Baby,” which topped the charts in 1974. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Anka remained active in the music industry, exploring various genres and maintaining a loyal fan base.
Anka’s versatility also led him to venture into acting, appearing in films and television shows. He made guest appearances in popular series such as “The Simpsons” and “Gilmore Girls,” showcasing his broad appeal and enduring relevance in popular culture.
Paul Anka has been married three times and is the father of six children. His marriages have been the subject of public interest, with his first marriage to Anne de Zogheb, a former model, lasting from 1963 to 2001. Anka has often spoken about the challenges and joys of balancing his demanding career with family life.
With a career spanning over six decades, today, Paul Anka continues to tour and perform. His contributions to the music industry have earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
