Norman Quentin Cook, known by his stage name Fatboy Slim, was born on July 31, 1963, in Bromley, Kent, England. Raised in Reigate, Surrey, he developed a passion for music at an early age. Cook’s interest in music began with learning to play the guitar and drums, eventually leading him to the world of DJing. He attended Reigate Grammar School and later studied English, politics, and sociology at Brighton Polytechnic.
Cook’s music career began in the late 1970s when he joined the punk band Disque Attack as the drummer. In 1985, he joined the Housemartins as the bassist, contributing to their hit single “Caravan of Love,” which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. After the Housemartins disbanded in 1988, Cook explored different musical styles and formed Beats International, which scored a number-one hit with “Dub Be Good to Me” in 1990.
In the mid-1990s, Cook adopted the moniker Fatboy Slim and released his debut album “Better Living Through Chemistry” in 1996. The album was a critical and commercial success, marking the rise of the big beat genre. His next album, “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby” (1998), catapulted him to international fame. Fatboy Slim’s success continued into the 2000s with the release of “Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars” (2000), featuring hits like “Weapon of Choice,” which included an iconic music video starring Christopher Walken. Cook’s ability to blend genres and create infectious dance tracks kept him at the forefront of the electronic music scene.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Cook released several compilation albums and continued to tour extensively, performing at major music festivals and events worldwide. His live performances, known for their high energy and crowd engagement, have made him a favorite among festival-goers.
Norman Cook married TV presenter Zoë Ball in 1999, and the couple had two children, Woody and Nelly. Despite their high-profile relationship, they faced challenges and briefly separated in 2003 before reconciling. However, they eventually divorced in 2016.
