The actor Jason Momoa celebrates 45 today

Born Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jason Momoa’s early life was marked by his diverse cultural heritage. He is of Hawaiian descent on his father’s side and of German, Irish, and Native American ancestry on his mother’s side. Raised in Norwalk, Iowa, by his mother, Coni Lemke, who worked as a photographer, Momoa’s early exposure to the arts and his unique background greatly influenced his later career and personal ethos.
Momoa’s career began in the late 1990s when he was discovered by designer Takeo Kobayashi, which led to a successful stint as a model. His striking looks and charismatic presence helped him win the title of Hawaii’s Model of the Year in 1999. This initial foray into the public eye soon transitioned into acting.
His first major acting role came in 1999 when he was cast as Jason Ioane in the action-drama series “Baywatch Hawaii,” a part he played until 2001. This role not only introduced him to a broader audience but also cemented his place in Hollywood as an up-and-coming star.
Momoa’s breakthrough came with his role as Ronon Dex on the science fiction television series “Stargate Atlantis” (2005-2009). His performance as the tough, taciturn warrior garnered him a loyal fan base and showcased his ability to handle action-oriented roles.
However, it was his portrayal of Khal Drogo in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (2011-2012) that catapulted Momoa to international fame. His powerful performance as the fierce Dothraki warlord earned him critical acclaim and opened doors to more significant opportunities in the film industry.
Momoa’s transition to blockbuster films began with his role as the titular character in “Conan the Barbarian” (2011). Although the film received mixed reviews, it solidified his reputation as a leading action star. His most iconic role to date is Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman, in the DC Extended Universe. First appearing in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017), Momoa headlined his own standalone film, “Aquaman,” in 2018. The movie was a massive commercial success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and establishing Momoa as a major box office draw.
Following the success of “Aquaman,” Momoa continued to take on diverse roles. He starred in the Apple TV+ series “See” (2019), a dystopian drama where he played Baba Voss, a tribal leader in a post-apocalyptic world. His versatility as an actor was further demonstrated in films like “Dune” (2021), where he played Duncan Idaho, a loyal and formidable warrior.
In his personal life, Jason Momoa is known for his down-to-earth nature and strong family ties. He married actress Lisa Bonet in 2017, though the couple had been together since 2005. They have two children, a daughter named Lola Iolani Momoa, and a son named Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa. Momoa is also a stepfather to Bonet’s daughter, Zoë Kravitz, from her previous marriage to musician Lenny Kravitz.
A passionate advocate for environmental causes, Momoa has been involved in various initiatives to protect marine life and promote sustainable practices. His connection to his Hawaiian heritage is a significant aspect of his identity, and he often speaks about the importance of preserving the environment and respecting indigenous cultures.
