Peter Cetera peaks to No.1 with “The Karate Kid II” theme song “Glory of Love” on this day in 1986
Released in June 1986 and backed with “On the Line”, Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love” remains one of 1980’s absolute classics and a timeless love ballad. Written and composed by Cetera, David Foster, and Cetera’s then-wife Diane Nini, “Glory of Love” was initially made as the end title for the 1985 film “Rocky IV”, but it was passed over by United Artists. It ends up being used as the theme for the 1986 blockbuster “The Karate Kid Part II”, which earned Cetera nominations for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Song. This was the first major hit Cetera had right after he left his band Chicago, and on August 2, 1986, it peaked to No.1 on the U.S Hot 100. “Glory Of Love” was also a smash hit worldwide and remains his most memorable solo song. The ballad is included on his 1986 LP “Solitude/Solitaire”, released to coincide with the theatrical release of “The Karate Kid Part II”. In 1987, “Glory of Love” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male Artist. It ends up winning an ASCAP Award for Most Performed Songs from a Motion Picture and a BMI Film & TV Award for Most Performed Song from a Film.
