By the mid 1960’s, The Beatles had established themselves as the bestselling Rock band in the world, and maybe even the bestselling music artists overall. With the Beatlemania at its peak, the band starred in their second film, “Help!” and such as they did with their debut film feature “A Hard Day’s Night”, wrote new songs for the soundtrack album (that became a hit on its own). The title song “Help!” was released as a single in the U.K on July 23, 1965, four days after the U.S release, and was backed with “I’m Down”. It quickly climbed the charts worldwide to No.1, in the U.K, it was the group’s eighth consecutive No.1 single, peaking to the top position on August 5, 1965. The song was mainly written by John Lennon but credited to Lennon-McCartney as most of all The Beatles original songs were. During an interview with Playboy in 1980, Lennon recounted: “The whole Beatles thing was just beyond comprehension. I was subconsciously crying out for help”. In the 1970, Lennon stated that the song was one of his favorites among the Beatles songs he wrote, adding that he also felt that “Help!” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” were his most honest, genuine Beatles songs and not just songs “written to order”. Initially, the film “Help!” was to be called “Eight Arms to Hold You”, but the production changed the title at last minute, which forced Lennon to write “Help!”. In the U.S, the song was the fourth of six number 1 singles in a row on the American charts: “I Feel Fine”, “Eight Days a Week”, “Ticket to Ride”, “Help!”, “Yesterday” and “We Can Work It Out”. Two promotional music films (videos) were made for “Help!” to appear on TV shows such as Top of the Pops and Thank Your Lucky Stars. They also shot a second version in late 1965 for inclusion in the year-end recap special of Top of the Pops.
