Yazz and the Plastic Population goes No. 1 across Europe in 1988 with their House music version of “The Only Way is Up”

Originally a Soul song written by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson and released in 1980 by Otis Clay, “The Only Way is Up” became a smash dance hit in 1988 when it was covered by House music act Yazz and the Plastic Population. Released on July 11, 1988, backed with “Bad House Music”, the follow up to Yazz’s previous single “Doctorin’ the House”, that had already been a hit, topped the charts across Europe during the Summer of 1988. In the U.K, it peaked to No.1 on August 6, 1988, where it stayed for five weeks and end up becoming the second biggest selling single of the year. In the hard United States music market, it reached number two on the Billboard dance chart, although only making number 96 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite being credited to Yazz and the Plastic Population, “The Only Way Is Up” was Yazz’s first solo single. The singer enjoyed a big popularity among House music and Dance music audiences, and even mainstream Pop fans, during the late 1980’s due to the song, but shortly after, her career went downfall, and she eventually retired from music.
