David Duchovny turns 64

One of the most popular faces in movies and TV over the last 30 plus years, actor, writer, producer, director, novelist, and singer-songwriter David Duchovny, was born David William Duchovny was born on August 7, 1960, in New York City. He is the son of Amram Duchovny, a writer and publicist, and Margaret Duchovny, a school administrator and teacher. Duchovny grew up in a culturally rich environment, influenced by his Jewish father and Scottish mother. He attended the Collegiate School for Boys in Manhattan and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Princeton University in 1982. Duchovny then pursued a Master of Arts in English Literature at Yale University, where he began working on his Ph.D. However, his academic career took a backseat to his growing interest in acting.
Duchovny’s acting career began in the late 1980s with small roles in television and film. One of his first TV appearances was in an advertisement for Löwenbräu beer in 1987 and he made his film debut in “Working Girl” (1988). Throughout 1990 and 1991 he had a recurring role on the television series “Twin Peaks” where he played DEA agent Denise Bryson and later, he also appeared in the erotic drama series “Red Shoe Diaries” (1992).
Duchovny’s big break came in 1993 when he was cast as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder in the science fiction television series “The X-Files.” The show, created by Chris Carter, followed Mulder and his partner, Dana Scully (played by Gillian Anderson), as they investigated paranormal and unexplained phenomena. “The X-Files” became a cultural phenomenon, running for eleven seasons and spawning two feature films. Duchovny’s portrayal of the conspiracy-theorist Mulder earned him critical acclaim and a devoted fan base, as well as Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
After leaving “The X-Files” as a regular cast member in 2001, Duchovny pursued various projects. He directed and starred in the film “House of D” (2004) and took on the role of writer Hank Moody in the Showtime series “Californication” (2007-2014). His performance in “Californication” was well-received, earning him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
Duchovny has also worked on several other television series and films, including a return to “The X-Files” for its revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. Additionally, he starred in the NBC series “Aquarius” (2015-2016), playing a 1960s LAPD detective.
Besides acting, Duchovny has explored his talents as a writer and musician. He has published several novels, including “Holy Cow: A Modern-Day Dairy Tale” (2015), “Bucky F*cking Dent” (2016), “Miss Subways” (2018), and “Truly Like Lightning” (2021). Duchovny has also released music albums, showcasing his skills as a singer-songwriter.
David Duchovny married actress Téa Leoni in 1997, and the couple had two children: a daughter, Madelaine West Duchovny, and a son, Kyd Miller Duchovny. The couple separated in 2008 and briefly reconciled before divorcing in 2014. Duchovny has been open about his struggles with sex addiction, for which he sought treatment in 2008.
Duchovny is known for his intellectual pursuits and continues to be active in both his acting and writing careers. He divides his time between his professional work and personal interests, including music and literature.
