The last concert of Queen with Freddie Mercury
On August 9, 1986, at Knebworth Park, Stevenage, England, 120,000 witnessed the original Queen playing together live for the very last time with Freddie Mercury. The final date of the successful 1986 European Magic Tour had its final date at Knebworth Park. Throughout the Magic Tour Queen played to more than a million people, legions of established fans, plus many new ones gained as a result of their show-stealing performance at Live Aid the previous year, support acts included The Alarm, INXS, Level 42, Marillion, Gary Moore and also The Bangles. At Knebworth Park, Big Country, Belouis Some and Status Quo provided the warmup of the crowd. The band played near a two hour show which showcased most of their greatest hits, opening with “One Vision” and ending in a particularly emotional rendition of “God Save The Queen”. Sadly, no official film of the concert exists, besides some low-quality amateur footage, but the audio was captured in high quality, some already used in the 1987 “Live Magic” album. According to some who were there, the crowd response was rapturous, reports are that the sound was excellent and everyone had a good view thanks to the big screen above the stage, displaying the concert as a triumph of organization. Shortly after five years, Freddie Mercury passed away at age 45, but not without adding more music to his legacy with the studio albums “The Miracle”, “Innuendo” and several unreleased songs that he asked the band to finish and release after his death.
