The actress Rosanna Arquette turns 65
Rosanna Lisa Arquette was born on August 10, 1959, in New York City. She comes from a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. Her father, Lewis Arquette, was an actor and director, and her mother, Brenda Denaut, was a poet and theater actress. Rosanna is one of five siblings, all of whom have pursued careers in the arts, including actors Patricia, David, Alexis, and Richmond Arquette. Growing up in a creative household, Arquette was exposed to the world of acting and performance from an early age, which greatly influenced her career path.
Rosanna Arquette began her acting career in the mid-1970s, appearing in television series and made-for-TV movies. Her first significant role came in 1978 when she appeared in an episode of the popular series “James” at 15. This led to more television work, and by the early 1980s, Arquette had established herself as a promising young actress in Hollywood.
As most of her siblings Patricia, Alexis, Richmond, and David, it was during the 1980’s that she got some of her first relevant movie roles. Her breakthrough film role came in 1982 with “The Executioner’s Song,” a TV movie based on the true story of Gary Gilmore. Arquette’s performance earned her critical acclaim and helped pave the way for her future success in film. That same year, she also starred in Baby It’s You (1983), a film directed by John Sayles.
Arquette’s most iconic role came in 1985 when she starred opposite Madonna in “Desperately Seeking Susan”. Her portrayal of the bored housewife Roberta Glass, who becomes entangled in a case of mistaken identity, earned her widespread acclaim and made her a household name. The film was a significant commercial success and remains a beloved classic, particularly for its portrayal of 1980s New York City.
Following the success of Desperately Seeking Susan, Arquette continued to take on a diverse range of roles in both mainstream and independent films. She starred in “After Hours” (1985), a dark comedy directed by Martin Scorsese and appeared in films like “8 million Ways to Die” (1986) and “Black Rainbow” (1989). Arquette was known for her ability to bring depth and nuance to her characters, often choosing roles that were unconventional or offbeat.
In the 1990s, Arquette continued to work steadily in film and television. One of her most notable roles during this period was in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” (1994), where she played Jody, the wife of a heroin dealer. Although her role was small, the film’s massive success helped keep Arquette in the spotlight. She also appeared in films like “Crash” (1996), directed by David Cronenberg, which pushed boundaries and further demonstrated her willingness to take on challenging material.
In the 2000s and beyond, Rosanna Arquette continued to work in both film and television, although she increasingly focused on independent films and documentary work. She appeared in films such as “The Whole Nine Yards” (2000) and “Joe Dirt” (2001), and she made guest appearances in popular TV series like “Will & Grace” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
In addition to her acting career, Arquette has become known for her work behind the camera. In 2002, she directed the critically acclaimed documentary “Searching for Debra Winger,” which explored the pressures faced by women in Hollywood and featured interviews with numerous high-profile actresses. The documentary highlighted Arquette’s passion for advocating for women’s rights and her interest in exploring the complexities of the entertainment industry.
Rosanna Arquette has been married four times and has one daughter, Zoë Bleu Sidel, born in 1994. Arquette has been open about her struggles in Hollywood, particularly the difficulties faced by women in the industry. She has also been a vocal advocate for social and political causes, including environmental issues and the #MeToo movement.
