The singer-songwriter Tanita Tikaram turns 55
Born in Münster, West Germany on August 12, 1969, singer-songwriter Tanita Tikaram, the daughter of a Fijian Indian British Army soldier and a Sarawakian mother, she moved at a young age to England and started singing her own acoustic-folkish songs in the London area nightclubs while she was still a teenager, and in 1988 at age 19 she released her debut album “Ancient Heart”. It remains Tikaram most successful album and earned her two major hits across Europe and some other countries in the world, the songs “Twist in My Sobriety” and “Good Tradition”. “Ancient Heart” sold around 4 million copies worldwide and Tanita was nominated at the 1989 Brit Awards for Best British Single and Female Artist categories respectively. But all the success had indeed a “twist”, and her next albums didn’t come as close to sell as much as her debut and didn’t produce any hit single. Disappointed with the music industry, despite being a talented songwriter, Tanita Tikaram retired in 1998 but returned in 2005 with the album “Sentimental”. Her latest album was released in 2016, “Closer to the People”. Tanita, a lesbian woman, has confirmed she has been in a relationship for the last five years with artist Natacha Horn, and though she still tours mainly throughout Europe these days, she has no rush to repeat the same success of her 1988 debut album.
