During the mid to late 1960’s. the Lovin’ Spoonful scored several hit songs, one of their most popular remains “Summer in the City”, originally released as a single on July 4, 1966, backed with “Butchie’s Tune”. Written by John Sebastian, Mark Sebastian, and Steve Boone, this Rock classic that famously features car horns and jackhammer noises during the instrumental bridge, to represent the sounds of a noisy city street, was included in the band’s 1966 album “Hums of the Lovin’ Spoonful”. On August 13 it peaked to No.1 on the US Hot 100 singles chart where it remained in the top position for three weeks. Prior to that song, the Lovin’ Spoonful already had hit the charts with the songs “Do You Believe in Magic”, “You Didn’t Gave to Be So Nice” and the also 1960’s classic “Daydream”. “Summer in the City” has been covered extensively by other artists throughout the years, including Joe Cocker who had a hit with his version.
