The actor Sean Penn turns 64 today

Prolific actor, political outspoken, controversial and with a troubled romantic life over the years, Sean Penn is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation. He was born Sean Justin Penn in Santa Monica, California, on August 17, 1960, son of director Leo Penn and brother of the late actor Chris Penn and singer-songwriter Michael Penn. Penn began his acting career in television with a brief appearance on one episode of “Little House on the Prairie” in 1974 directed by his father Leo. His first memorable role was in 1982 on the teen comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, and after that he quickly rose as one of the 1980’s most promising actors. In 1985 Penn met Madonna, and after only a few months dating the couple got married. In 1986 both starred together on “Shangai Surprise”, a box office flop but now regarded as a cult movie. Despite early public displays of affection, such as Madonna dedicating her third studio album “True Blue” in 1986 to Penn, referring to him in the liner notes as “the coolest guy in the universe”, the marriage became turbulent and ended in divorce in 1989. In between that period, there were Penn’s violent outbursts against the press, including one incident where he was arrested for assaulting a photographer on a film set, which got him sentenced to 60 days in jail. Madonna first filled for divorce in 1987, but stepped back, however, after she reportedly filed an assault complaint that was beaten in her Malibu, California home by Penn, in 1989 the couple divorced for good. the Associated Press reported though, that she had “dropped assault charges.” In 2015 Madonna stated the allegations of Penn’s domestic violence towards her during their marriage were “completely outrageous, malicious, reckless, and false”. Shortly after the relationship with Madonna was over, Penn moved in with actress Robin Wright with whom he got married and had two children. They separated in 1995, during which time he developed a relationship with singer Jewel, which also didn’t last. Most recently, in December 2013, Penn began dating actress Charlize Theron and the two announced their engagement in December 2014, however, Theron ended their relationship in June 2015. Despite all the controversy surrounding his private life, Penn’s acting skills have been highly rewarded, including two academy awards for “Mystic River” in 2003 and “Milk” in 2008 in which he played the role of LGBT activist Harvey Milk. He also got an Oscar nomination for “Dead Man Walking” in 1995 and won the Best Actor Award for it at the Berlin Film Festival. Sean Penn received another two Oscar nominations for Woody Allen’s comedy-drama “Sweet and Lowdown” in 1999 and the acclaimed drama “I Am Sam” in 2001. Penn also engages in political and social activism, including his criticism of the George W. Bush administration, his contact with the Presidents of Cuba and Venezuela, and his humanitarian work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina 2005 and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Now maturing and, less controversial than his angst youth days, Penn turns 64 today, one day after ex-wife Madonna turned 66.
