Pop singer and songwriter Mika turns 41
Since the release of his debut album “Life in Cartoon Motion” in 2007, singer and songwriter Mika has been praised by the critics as one of the best contemporary Pop music artists. Mika was born in Beirut, Lebanon on August 18, 1983, and shortly after, the singer’s family was forced to leave war-torn Lebanon and moved to Paris, France where he stayed until he was nine years old, moving then to London, England. Mika, who wrote his first song at the young age of seven, released his debut single “Relax, Take It Easy” in 2005, and the song became quite popular due to privileged airplay from BBC Radio. His popularity spread quickly across Europe where songs like “Grace Kelly” and “Big Girls You Are Beautiful” became smash hits for Mika. He also toured the U.S, however, with limited visibility and difficulty in breaking into the American music market. He released his second album in 2009, “The Boy Who Knew Too Much” that didn’t quite achieve the same success as his debut. Due to his vocals, Mika and his music have been compared to artists such as Freddie Mercury, Scissor Sisters, Elton John, David Bowie, Prince and Robbie Williams, and actually references Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the lyrics of the hit song “Grace Kelly”: “I try to be like Grace Kelly/But all her looks were too sad/So I try a little Freddie/I’ve gone identity mad.”. Since he first got famous, that the rumors on his sexuality also followed that same success. For several times Mika refused to comment on his sexuality, and in 2009 even stated in an interview that he was bisexual: “I’ve never ever labelled myself. But having said that; I’ve never limited my life; I’ve never limited who I sleep with … Call me whatever you want. Call me bisexual, if you need a term for me …” But in a 2012 interview with the magazine Instinct, the singer stated that he was in fact gay. On May 2019 Mika released his single, “Ice Cream”, and announced his 5th album “Michael Holbrook”, released on 4 October 2019. His lates album “Que ta tête fleurisse toujours” was released in 2024.
