Robert Redford turns 88
Robert Redford remains one of the most popular actors in the world. Part of Hollywood Royalty, the movie star was born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California. He made his film debut in 1962 with “War Hunt”, and quickly rose to stardom during the 1960’s decade. In 1965 he got a Golden Globe for his role on the movie “Inside Daisy Clover” but it was with “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” from 1969 that Redford became a worldwide acclaimed and famous actor. During the 1970’s he starred on popular and critical acclaimed movies such as “Jeremiah Johnson” in 1972, “The Sting” in 1973 which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and of course the popular “All the President’s Men” in 1976, a landmark in his career and movie history. During the 1980’s Robert Redford begun also to direct and his first directed movie was “Ordinary People” in 1980, one of the most critically and publicly acclaimed films of the decade, winning four Oscars including Best Picture and the Academy Award for Best Director for Redford. During that decade he also starred in blockbusters such as “Brubaker” in 1980 and the enormous critical and box office success “Out Of Africa” which won seven Oscars including Best Picture. In recent years, Redford has been a very much active actor, starring in contemporary movie hits such as the 2014 “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, however, recently he stated that he intends to retire from acting after his final movie, “The Old Man & the Gun”, is completed. Redford also helped founding the Sundance Film Festival in 1978 and was named by People magazine as the Godfather of Indie Film, aside of his film career, Redford also is an outspoken activist that supports environmentalism, Native American rights, LGBT rights. He has been flirted with politics by supporting political causes as well as political candidates. He endorsed Democratic President Barack Obama for re-election in 2012, but controversy sparked when he was quoted on the back cover of Donald Trump’s book “Crippled America” in 2015 saying of Trump’s candidacy, “I’m glad he’s in there, being the way he is.” However, Redford’s comment was intended to be sarcastic, as the rest of the comment follows, “He’s got such a big foot in his mouth I’m not sure you could get it out.” In 2016, Redford was honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. He turns 88 today.
