Dan Peters, born on August 18, 1967, in Seattle, Washington, is best known as the drummer for the influential grunge band Mudhoney. His work has had a lasting impact on the Seattle music scene, particularly during the rise of grunge in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Peters began his musical career in the mid-1980s, playing with various local bands in Seattle. His first major role was as the drummer for the band Bundle of Hiss, where he honed his skills and developed a reputation for his powerful and dynamic drumming style. In 1988, Peters joined Mudhoney, a band that would go on to become one of the cornerstones of the grunge movement. Mudhoney’s debut single, “Touch Me I’m Sick,” released that same year, became a defining anthem of the genre, with Peters’ drumming playing a crucial role in its raw, energetic sound.
As Mudhoney gained popularity, they became known for their influence on other grunge bands, including Nirvana and Soundgarden. Peters briefly played with Nirvana in 1990, recording the track “Sliver” before Dave Grohl became the band’s full-time drummer. Although his stint with Nirvana was short, Peters’ contribution to the track remains a significant part of the band’s early history.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Peters continued to perform and record with Mudhoney, helping the band maintain its status as one of the enduring forces of grunge music. Albums like Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge (1991) and My Brother the Cow (1995) showcased Peters’ consistent and innovative drumming, solidifying his place as a key figure in the genre.
In addition to his work with Mudhoney, Peters has been involved in various other musical projects, collaborating with bands like Screaming Trees and contributing to the Seattle music community in numerous ways. His passion for music has kept him active in the industry for decades, with Mudhoney continuing to tour and release new material well into the 21st century.
The band’s latest studio album “Plastic Eternity,” was released in 2023.
