Portuguese actress Maria de Medeiros turns 59
Born in Lisbon, Portugal on August 19, 1965, the actress Maria de Medeiros remains for some the fragile French girl Fabienne, the girlfriend of Bruce Willis character Butch Coolidge in the 1994 Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece “Pulp Fiction”, her acting career though, has been much more than just the Fabienne character.
The Portuguese actress who is the daughter of a classical musician and composer, has been involved in both European and American film productions almost since the beginning of her career that started at age 15. At 18 she moved to France to pursue her acting studies where she ends up also building a name for herself as an actress. In 1990, she played the role of Maria in Ken McMullen’s film about the rise of the Paris Commune, “1871”, but her first big role, and considered one of the highlights in her career, was in the 1990 Philip Kaufman’s movie “Henry & June” alongside Fred Ward and Uma Thurman, where she plays one of the lead roles, the bisexual author Anaïs Nin, with whom Medeiros shared a considerable physical resemblance. She would meet Uma Thurman again in 1994 in the Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”, playing the already mentioned Bruce Willis French girlfriend Fabienne. Throughout the 1990’s Medeiros had a successful career mainly in Europe, appearing in many of productions, especially Portuguese and French. In 2000 the actress became also a director, and her first film was “April Captains” in which she also had a small role. Prolific both as a stage, movie and TV actress, Maria de Medeiros also has inherited musical talent from her father, in 2007, she released her debut album, “A Little More Blue”, where she sings in Portuguese, French and English. In 2010 she released her second “Peninsulas & Continentes”, and in between collaborations with other music artists she also released in 2016 “The Piano’s Playing the Devil’s Tune” with Phoebe Killdeer & the Shift. Today she turns 59.
