Top 10 John Deacon Queen songs
The quiet and talented John Deacon was never too much fond of the spotlight, not even when Queen was performing for tens of thousands of people, but he played a crucial role in shaping the band’s unique sound and contributed to some of their most memorable hits. The only Queen member who never sung in any of their songs, was born on August 19, 1951, in Leicester, England. Deacon showed an early interest in electronics and music, playing bass guitar in local bands while still a teenager. After studying electronics at Chelsea College in London, he joined Queen in 1971, becoming the last member to join the classic lineup that included Freddie Mercury (vocals), Brian May (guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums). Deacon’s technical skills and quiet demeanor complemented the dynamic personalities of his bandmates, making him a vital, albeit understated, part of the group. His electronics knowledge also came to hand when he built the home-made Deacy Amp which guitarist Brian May used to create guitar orchestras throughout Queen’s career.
His contributions to Queen were significant, both as a bassist and a songwriter. Deacon wrote several of the band’s biggest hits, including “You’re My Best Friend,” “I Want to Break Free,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” and “Spread Your Wings.” His ability to craft catchy bass lines and memorable melodies helped to define Queen’s sound, particularly in the 1980s when the band achieved global superstardom.
“Another One Bites the Dust,” released in 1980, became one of Queen’s best-selling singles and showcased Deacon’s talent for blending rock with funk influences. The song’s success in the United States helped to cement Queen’s status as international rock legends.
Despite his crucial role in the band, Deacon preferred to stay out of the spotlight, often letting his bandmates take center stage. His low-key nature earned him the nickname “The Quiet One” among fans. However, his influence within the band was undeniable, particularly in financial and managerial aspects, where his background in electronics and business acumen proved invaluable.
After Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, Deacon’s involvement with Queen gradually diminished. He participated in the band’s final studio album, Made in Heaven (1995), which featured Mercury’s posthumous vocals. Following that, Deacon retired from the music industry in 1997, still mourning the death of his friend and band mate Mercury, choosing to lead a private life away from the public eye.
John Deacon married Veronica Tetzlaff in 1975, and the couple has six children. Deacon has maintained a low profile since retiring, rarely making public appearances and choosing to focus on his family and personal interests.
