The Motown hit “Please Mr. Postman” by The Marvelettes was released on August 21, 1961. Written by the songwriting team Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland and Robert Bateman, it went on to become a huge success and the first Motown hit to reach No.1 on the Hot 100, selling over a million copies in the U.S alone. The Marvelettes singer Gladys Horton sings the story of the song, telling how she hopes that the postman brings a letter from her boyfriend, who is away at war. A less known fact about “Please Mr. Postman” is the band who plays i it, the Funk Brothers, who featured future Soul star Marvin Gaye on drums. In 1964 The Beatles released their also successful version of the song in their second album “With The Beatles” (U.K and worldwide) and on “The Beatles’ Second Album” in the U.S. It was also released as a single in some parts of the world. Another notable cover was the one made by the Carpenters in 1975 that also reached the top position of the Billboard Hot 100.
